AC Tripping the Breaker in Riyadh Summer? Electrical Causes Explained
Riyadh summers put more load on home electrical systems than almost anywhere else. Split units and central ACs run for hours without a break, and an electrical weakness that goes unnoticed in winter shows up the moment temperatures climb.
If your AC keeps tripping the breaker, the problem can be the AC itself, the circuit feeding it, or the distribution board. Here is how to tell the difference.
Why ACs trip breakers more in summer
An air conditioner’s compressor draws a large surge of current every time it starts. In extreme heat the compressor works harder and starts more often, so a circuit that is already close to its limit will trip.
Common electrical causes
- The AC shares a circuit with other heavy appliances instead of having a dedicated line.
- The cable feeding the AC is too thin for its power rating, so it heats up.
- Loose or burnt terminals at the isolator switch, socket or breaker.
- A weak or old breaker that trips below its rated current.
- A failing compressor capacitor causing a very high start-up current.

Problems inside the AC unit
Dirty filters and blocked condenser coils make the compressor work harder and draw more current. Low refrigerant and a failing fan motor have the same effect. If the AC trips only after running for a while, a dirty unit or an overheating compressor is likely.
An AC technician handles the refrigeration side, but the circuit, cable, isolator and breaker are electrical work. In many cases both need to be checked.
How to prevent AC tripping
- Give every large AC unit its own dedicated circuit and correctly sized breaker.
- Clean filters every two to four weeks in summer, because Riyadh dust clogs them quickly.
- Avoid switching on all ACs at the same moment after a power cut. Start them a few minutes apart.
- Have the DB box and AC connections inspected before summer starts.
Warning signs that need an electrician now
A burning smell from the isolator or socket, a melted plug, a breaker that is hot to the touch, or lights that dim heavily when the AC starts all point to an electrical problem that can cause a fire. Switch the AC off at the breaker and call a professional.
