Why Does My Circuit Breaker Keep Tripping? Causes and Fixes
A circuit breaker that trips once in a while is doing its job: it cuts the power before a wire overheats or someone gets a shock. But when the same breaker trips again and again, your electrical system is telling you something is wrong.
In Riyadh homes this is one of the most common calls we receive, especially in summer when air conditioners run all day. Below are the usual causes, what you can safely check yourself, and the signs that mean you should stop resetting the breaker and call an electrician.
1. Circuit overload
An overload happens when the devices on one circuit draw more current than the breaker is rated for. Running a split AC, a kettle, a microwave and an iron on the same kitchen circuit is a classic example.
How to recognise it: the breaker trips after a few minutes of heavy use, not instantly, and it holds again when you switch some devices off. The fix is to spread heavy appliances across different circuits, or have an electrician add a dedicated circuit for high-power appliances such as ACs, ovens and water heaters.
2. Short circuit
A short circuit happens when a live wire touches a neutral wire, usually because of damaged insulation, a loose connection inside a socket, or a faulty appliance. The breaker trips immediately, sometimes with a spark, a pop or a burning smell.
Do not keep resetting a breaker that trips instantly. Each reset sends a large current through the fault and can damage wiring or start a fire.

3. Ground fault or earth leakage
If your distribution board (DB box) has an RCD or earth leakage breaker, it will trip when current leaks to earth. Water is the most common trigger: a wet outdoor socket, a leaking water heater, or moisture inside a bathroom fitting.
- Check whether the trip happens after rain, mopping or using the shower.
- Look for water near sockets, light fittings and the water heater.
- Unplug appliances one by one to find a faulty one, such as an old washing machine or kettle.
4. A faulty appliance
Sometimes the wiring is fine and the problem is a single appliance. Unplug everything on the circuit, reset the breaker, then plug devices back in one at a time. If the breaker trips as soon as one device is connected, that device needs repair or replacement.
5. An old or weak breaker
Breakers wear out. In older villas and apartments, a breaker can become weak and trip below its rated current, or the connections inside the DB box can loosen and heat up. Discolouration, a warm panel or a buzzing sound are signs that the board needs professional inspection.
What you can safely do yourself
- Switch off and unplug the devices on the affected circuit, then reset the breaker once.
- Reconnect devices one by one to find the one that causes the trip.
- Move heavy appliances to different circuits.
- Never tape a breaker in the ON position or replace it with a higher rating yourself.
When to call an electrician
Call a professional if the breaker trips immediately after reset, if you smell burning or see scorch marks, if the DB box feels hot, or if the tripping started after renovation work. A qualified electrician will test the circuit, find the exact fault and repair it safely.
